Scammers Target Furloughed Gov’t Employees
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Furlough days aren’t the only obstacle standing in some government employees way, scammers are going after them too.
The Better Business Bureau of Central Georgia is getting calls from worried employees after scammers contacted them saying their entitled to tax free grants, almost nine thousand dollars worth.
The scammers are really after account numbers of furloughed workers and the BBB wants employees to take precaution.
“For everyone person that calls in there are probably ten that called and hung up and went along their way, and there is also those people who may have given out that information and their just waiting for that money to come in and we wanted to catch them early so that they could contact their banks and let them know that they’ve possibly have been victimized by a scam,” Kelvin Collins, President and CEO of the Central Georgia Better Business Bureau said.
Officials say possible red flags for this grant include being randomly selected via phone or email, if no specific information is provided about the grant, or if you’ve never applied for it all.
