Jones County Ready to Start Full Pads Thursday

GRAY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – It sure has been a long time since football season, hasn’t it?  Can you believe now it’s right around the corner?

Good news for high school football fans: teams from all over Georgia have already started practice.  For the last few days, players have only been in helmets, but starting Thursday, they’ll be dressed in full pads.

Dwight Jones has been coaching at Jones County for six years.  He says you never really know what you have until you throw on the pads.

“You’ll find out,” says Jones.  “Everybody probably looks pretty good running around in shorts and t-shirts; even we look pretty good doing that.  We try to be the best we can be every snap of the football.  You have to be a physical football player.  When we talk about putting a hat on somebody, that means you gotta go out and attack somebody.”

Of course, for the next few weeks, the Jones County Greyhounds will be attacking each other, but Jones says all the extra time in the weight room during the offseason makes a huge difference.

“You’ve gotten bigger,” he says.  “You’ve gotten stronger.  Some of our kids have worked themselves into the opportunity to be able to play, and now they have to go out and prove it.”

Jones County will have a scrimmage at its stadium in Gray Friday night.  Jones says fans and parents are welcome to attend.

The End Zone, which runs Friday nights on 41NBC, returns August 30.
