Centerville Police Testing Out New Tag Reader Gear
CENTERVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Centerville Police are testing out some new gear that’s helping them take illegal drivers off the road.
The tag reader system rapidly scans license plates and within seconds pulls up information related to the vehicle.
There’s three cameras that help the system capture the information.
Centerville Police Captain Roger Hayes says, in just one week, an officer caught 21 violators.
Hayes says it helps get those uninsured drivers off the roads.
“This takes it and makes it where that vehicle is taken off the road. So if another motorist happens to have an accident with him, they won’t be in a jam,” said Hayes.
Hayes says the department will purchase one set of the pricey equipment which runs about $24,000.
He says it is time consuming for the officer operating it, so for now, they’ll equip just one car with the new gear.
