Kids Pair up with Cops to Shop for School Supplies

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – It’s a tradition that dates back decades, and it’s been going on here in middle Georgia now for the past 14 years.

Thanks to the Fraternal Order of Police, underprivileged kids in the community get to shop with a cop two times a year.  The best part is.. their parents don’t have to pay for it!

Around 80 kids hit the aisles Tuesday at the Harrison Road Walmart in Macon.  Their mission? Cross off the items on their back-to-school lists.

Officers from the Macon Police Department, Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and GBI were all on hand Tuesday.  They say events like these are totally worth it.

“When you see somebody grab you by the leg and hug you, and tell you they thank you, you’ve done a good deed,” says president of the FOP,  Lt. Danny Thigpen.  “And you know they’re going to school with school supplies and clothes.”

The FOP will host its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive again this November, and when Christmas rolls around, the kids will hit the stores for another shopping spree.

Thigpen says none of these events would be possible without donations from the community.
