UPDATE: State Knew of Injured Horse, Man Facing Animal Cruelty Charges Cannot Own Animals
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Georgia Department of Agriculture knew about the injured horse at the home of a Macon man who is facing animal cruelty charges.
Equine Manager Matt Thompson tells 41NBC his department first learned about that horse’s condition in May. He says the department went out to Raymond Carlisle’s home off Walden Road several times. A vet recommended to euthanize the animal, but Carlisle told the state that he did not have the money and was reluctant to put the horse down.
Thompson says a vet was scheduled to come out “in the very near future” to put down the horse.
Before that could happen, Macon-Bibb Animal Welfare and the Bibb County District Attorney’s Office opened an investigation.
On Thursday, equine inspectors from the state removed three donkeys and a horse. They were sent to the Mansfield impound facility where they will receive treatment and rehabilitation.
Carlisle has voluntarily surrendered all of the dogs and cats. On Friday, animal control officers went to the home to pick them up. A woman who identified herself as Carlisle’s wife said she wouldn’t help them until 41NBC left. She declined to comment on the situation.
Carlisle posted bond Thursday afternoon. Magistrate Judge Barbara Harris released Carlisle on the condition that he can not possess or care for any animals.
Carlisle’s wife told 41NBC he no longer lives at the home.
Animal control is working with local rescue groups to take care of the dogs and cats. No word on what will happen to the remaining farm animals.
