Unadilla City Hall Renovations Near Completion

UNADILLA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – After years of battling budget issues, Unadilla’s new million dollar city hall is almost complete.

The 8,600 square foot facility will house the city’s municipal offices and the new senior center.

“We’re about 1//3 of the way complete,” said Unadilla Mayor Bobby West.

The transformation of the 100-year-old building in downtown Unadilla cost the city a little over a million dollars and the budgeting came with some concerns. Last year, 41NBC reported the city was having trouble funding the new facility. On Wednesday, the mayor said the passing of the Special Purpose Local Options Sales Tax (SPLOST) has helped move the project forward.

“At this time, we don’t anticipate any shortage,” said West.

Now four years since the project began, West plans to move into his new office as early as September.

“The whole building will be more accommodating; we’re very cramped in this building,” West said.

The spacious building is equipped with security and technology upgrades and better accommodations for the city’s customers. He hopes city hall’s renovations are a framework for revitalization in this small town.

“If the city invests itself downtown, other business will come and we can kind of build our downtown back,” West said.

In addition to construction on the structure itself, the city is revamping its website to allow customers to pay their bills online. West said he plans to use the old city hall building as a visitor’s center.
