Community Activist Running for Mayor in New Macon-Bibb Government

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The race in the new Macon – Bibb County government has another name to add to the list.

Community activist Anthony Harris announced his intent to run for Mayor.

He says has a lot of things he wants to take care of day one if he’s elected.

Harris says the first thing he’ll do if he’s mayor is start combing through personnel files of the consolidated government’s law enforcement.

He’s been outspoken about his dissatisfaction with the city and police force, after the officer involved shooting death of a man at Kroger.

His public displays of opposition have even landed him in jail.

Thursday at his news conference in front of city hall, Harris says he wants to shorten the Cherry Blossom Festival to just a day or two, and add a weeklong music concert series.

He also wants to create a section in the downtown area dedicated to Native Americans.

He says he’s not paying the money needed to qualify, instead he’ll run as a write-in or under the pauper clause.

“I refuse to pay the $3,000 because I don’t think politics is about money, I don’t think it’s about how much money you can get, how much schmoozing you can do. We need to take that out, I refuse to pay the $3,000 and I refuse to ask for contributions from people to give me money to pay the $3,000,” Harris said.

A candidate with a lower income level can run under the pauper’s clause, if they can’t afford legal fees.

Harris also says he hasn’t voted since 1992 because he became an anarchist, but he’s now a registered voter.
