Skies Clear for Lake Tobesofkee Fireworks, Hundreds Turn Out After Slow Day
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – It rained all day Thursday, but hundreds still turned out at Lake Tobesofkee to watch the annual fireworks celebration.
Earlier in the afternoon, it was very bare on the beach. Only a few families were out braving the rain to cook out and celebrate America’s independence.
The live entertainment, “The New Skrews Band,” was canceled because their sound equipment mixed with all the rain would have made it unsafe for them and the people there to celebrate.
26-year-old Jon Keene says he’s been at Lake Tobesofkee on the 4th every year of his life, and a little rain wasn’t going to keep him and his family away.
“We grill, we come out here and play some music and enjoy the band, which they don’t have this year,” says Keene. “But we’re going to stick it out anyway and enjoy some fireworks and just have a great time fellow shipping with our family.”
As recreation director Doug Furney promised, the fireworks went off Thursday around 9:30.
Even though it was very soggy out there, hundreds turned out after dark to watch the celebration, and several cars were still trying to get to the lake to see the fireworks as we were leaving.
Warner Robins Celebration Set For Sunday
The annual Independence Day Celebration in Warner Robins was postponed Wednesday due to bad weather, but the concert and fireworks show are rescheduled for Sunday night at McConnell-Talbert Stadium.
Warner Robins native Bobbie Eakes will be performing along with southern rock group Stillwater. Two members of the Air Force Reserve Band will likely join them on stage on a night Mayor Chuck Shaheen said would still be about honoring the Reserve Band.
Gates open at 6 Sunday, the concert starts at 8 and fireworks will follow.
