UPDATE: Warner Robins Independence Day Celebration Washed Out Again

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – It was supposed to be a day of celebration, but around 7:45 Sunday night, Warner Robins city officials told the crowd gathered at McConnell-Talbert Stadium to pack up and seek shelter.

The fireworks display and U.S Air Force “Reserve Generation” band’s performance had been postponed until further notice because of lightning in the area.

As the skies clouded, Mayor Chuck Shaheen became concerned. The Independence Day concert and fireworks were officially cancelled around 9:45 pm.

“Safety is the most important concern with our citizens and if there is going to be lightning within 6 miles, we are going to suspend the event,” Shaheen said.

Warner Robins Mayor Chuck Shaheen told 41NBC via text there’s a good chance the event will be rescheduled. The event was originally scheduled for Wednesday, July 3, but it was cancelled due to inclement weather.

This year’s red, white and blue birthday bash was funded by private and corporate sponsors. The $100,000 show was supported by the community after budget cuts forced Air Force bases nationwide to furlough fireworks. It was supposed to be the “Reserve Generation” band’s final performance.

“We really want to honor our military and armed forces,” Shaheen said, “we live in a free country and we’re free because of what our military’s done for us.”
