Meals on Wheels Saddling Up for Fundraiser

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Houston County Meals on Wheels is hoping to wrangle up some cash during a fundraiser this weekend to help support the program.

It’s called “Saddle Up for Meals on Wheels.” The fundraiser is a poker ride on horseback where you can play the chips and help the community at the same time.

Executive director Kenny Weaver says Meals on Wheels is facing funding issues due to federal budget cuts. The Houston County branch has downsized its service—it is serving 14 fewer clients than it had in the beginning of the year and there are more than 100 people on a waiting list to join the program.

He hopes to raise enough money to overcome these financial hardships.

“We’ve done a number of things over the past several months including a mail out to regular donors who really stepped up, we talked to some of the businesses who always help us and we’ve done a couple of small fundraisers, we’re actually pretty close now to needing only $10,000 before the end of the year,” Weaver said.

The fundraiser is Friday through Sunday at the Silver Spur Riding Club located at 1542 New Evergreen Road, East Dublin. Gates for the event open at 8 a.m. on Friday. Registration starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday. There is a $20 entry fee and it costs $5 per hand to play.
