Macon Competes for Main Street Makeover
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) –Soon the faded facades along Poplar Street could see a new lease on life and a fresh coat of paint, but in order to recieve the revitalization, Macon needs your vote.
Macon is one of 100 cities competing for a vibrant makeover with a national online contest called “Main Street Matters”. The competition is sponsored by Benjamin Moore Paint Company. The manufacturer will repaint and refurbish the main street with the most community support. Macon is an active competitor. If the city wins, the massive restoration will include Cherry and Poplar Streets.
Local business owners, leaders and residents are spreading the word in hopes to win the competition.
“I love Macon,” said Sandra Byrant, owner of Pink Chief Boutique downtown, “when I drive across town, I want to be able to say ‘Boy, they fixed that and it looks great'”.
Lemongrass Thai Bistro owner Gary Schechterle says there is already a renaissance underway in downtown Macon. The new hues would just be the icing on the cake.
“People say, I want to see it become like Charleston and all these other towns,” Schechterle said, “and they know Macon can do just that.”
