Bibb County Coroner: Check On Elderly During Hot Months

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The extreme heat is taking it’s toll on everyone, but Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones says this time of year it’s especially important to check on the elderly.

From the blaring sun to heat waves bouncing off the pavement all over Macon you can see and feel the summer temperatures.

Jones is urging family members or care takers to check in elderly more frequently because of the rising temps.

He says neighbors should be aware of people who live alone. If something seems out of the ordinary, call authorities.

“If you have a neighbor that cuts his or her grass all the time and all of a sudden it hasn’t been cut in a couple of days, something’s wrong… You know, a lot of people are divorced, living alone and my suggestion to them is have a friend or a relative that you can call, that someone can call and check on you,” said Jones.

Unfortunately, Jones says since he’s been in office he’s seen at least one to two deaths each year during these hot months.

He recommends everyone slow down, stay hydrated, and take care of those who may not be able to take care of themselves.
