Bibb Commission Approves Insurance Consulting Firm, Edwards Opposes Choice
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — After delaying the decision, the Bibb County Commission voted to approve a firm for insurance consulting services, but it came with strong opposition from Commissioner Lonzy Edwards.
In a four to one vote, the commissioners decided on BB&T to help put together the employee benefits packages for the new government.
Edwards said he felt the bidding process was flawed, and that the Consolidation Transition Task Force changed the process midway through. He felt the job should have been awarded to Gallagher Benefit Services.
Edwards said the firm has proved it’s work in the past, and even saved the county money.
“I think they’re in a position to save us money and do this work if they had been given the chance by the transition task force, and the other thing is based on my understanding of the request for proposals they were the only firm that complied with the document that was required,” said Edwards.
Commissioner Gary Bechtel voted in favor of the consulting firm.
“I had initial concerns when it was originally presented to the commission. I had those questions answered, I had my issues resolved and I put my faith in the judgement of the task force cause they looked at all the information and I supported their decision just as city council supported their decision,” said Bechtel.
Bechtel says the firm has to have the benefits package ready to go by October so employees can enroll in the program.
