Bibb County Won’t Make Switch to Year-Round Calendar for 2014-2015 School Year

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Bibb County students won’t be making the switch to year-round school anytime soon.

Since February, a task force made up of district staff has been weighing the option to make the switch to a 45 days on, 15 days off calendar for the 2014-2015 school year.

Part of the process was conducting a survey of more than 900 district employees on whether they favored the calendar change.  292 supported the concept, but an overwhelming 626 were against it.

Thursday, the task force recommended the school board table the decision for the 2014-2015 school year.  Deputy superintendent Jane Drennan, who facilitated the task force, says it’s time to get back to square one.

“I think at this time, we need to probably promote some of the understanding and history around why that might be a beneficial calendar for us,” says Drennan.

The task force also mentioned a switch to the calendar would cost the district more on utility bills.

Drennan says the district could still reconsider making the change for the 2015-2016 school year.
