Perry Police New License Plate Readers
PERRY, Georgia (41 NBC/WMGT) – The Perry Police Department is trying out some new equipment to make their jobs more effective and a little easier.
They’re experimenting with new license tag readers and 41 NBC rode along with an officer to see how this new technology works.
It’s an automatic tag reader that scans every vehicle’s license plate on the left, right, front and back of the squad car.
Other police departments in middle Georgia have been using the system for years and Captain Bill Phelps loves the new system and the fact that it’s helping officers.
“It just alerts on things that we normally wouldn’t see with our naked eye,” Phelps said.
The new tool, officers are experimenting with, keeps even more eyes in the community.
“It’s like another tool that will help keep crime down and keep our city and streets safe.”
Sgt. Brian Mixon has the system in his patrol car and says that it’s been a huge help
“It’s very proficient it runs multiple tags, and one good thing about too is that it completely takes out, there is no gut feeling or profiling it runs every tag on every vehicle, you don’t have any of the biases from the officers,” Mixon said.
The new license tag reader system is just an experiment right now in Perry.
Sgt. Mixon says it’s like having another officer in the car, keeping it’s eyes on the road.
He did say however, the system is only a tool, and officers still have to be fully alert while on the job.
