Macon Police Department Appoints New Internal Affairs Director

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division has a new director.

On Monday, Captain Terry Timely, with the criminal investigation division, will take over the new position. The current director, Captain Jimmy Barbee will be reassigned to work in the criminal investigation division. Timely is a long-time department veteran and worked in internal affairs for about five years, according to MPD’s spokesperson Jami Gaudet.

The department restructuring is the result of a new city ordinance. Earlier this month, Macon City Council voted to change the internal affairs processes, requiring additional accountability, a quicker rotation of officers and more citizen input. The mayor and chief administrative officer will also play a part in reviewing department complaints.

Macon City Council members urged for change shortly after Sammie Davis, Jr. was shot add killed by Macon Police officer Clayton Sutton outside Kroger in December. Within recent months, several other officers have been arrested for various incidents. Sutton, the officer involved in the Kroger incident, was disciplined more than a dozen times before the shooting.
