Global Rallycross Coming to Atlanta Motor Speedway
HAMPTON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Anew motorsports experience is racing into Atlanta Motor Speedway this year. It’s called Global Rallycross.
It’s a new era of racing.
“It’s really a young lifestyle event,” Atlanta Motor Speedway president Ed Clark said. “This appeals to families, teenagers, young adults.”
Born out of the X-Games, Global Rallycross is an action packed race on a unique course featuring dirt and gravel surfaces, airborne jumps, drift turns, and of course, high speeds.
“It’s a wild ride in this thing. Its a short wheel based with so much power. two liters making 600 horse power. The car is just flat out violent.,” GCR champion Tanner Foust said. “[The] first time I drove a rallycross car I said, ‘Holy crap!’ I was blown away by it.”
Foust is the first American to race professionally in rallycross. He loves the thrill of being behind the wheel during a fast paced race.
“Ultimately when you see the cars racing door to door, you’re fighting for tenths of a second,” Foust said. “They’ll only be a few half second or a couple tenths of a second separating the guys with all the sliding, all the jumping and everything.”
Going from zero to 6o miles per hour in 1.9 seconds may scare some people.
“I tell people all the time that its scary, the car is trying to kill me. That’s just what it feels like,” Foust said.
Now Foust wants to share his passion with the Peach State.
“There’s really a strong, young racing culture here and I think that is something Global Rallycross will pull out of the streets of Atlanta and [get] people down to the Atlanta Motor Speedway to see action sports.”
Grandstand tickets for Global Rallycross Atlanta are on sale now. Adult general admission is $20, pit paddock access is $25, and tickets for kids ages six to 12 are $10.
