Apartment Complex Catches Fire in North Macon; Cause Undetermined

fireMACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – An apartment complex in Bibb County caught fire early Wednesday evening, and fire officials are still trying to determine what caused it.

It happened at Lullwater at Bass Apartments off Bass Road in North Macon around 6:30. Residents looked on as smoke billowed out of the third story roof.

It appeared the fire started at the bottom of one of the building’s columns, and firefighters had to take an ax to the column to control it. One witness was in class when it started.

“My roommate sent me a text in class that said “Apartment on fire,” and then called, so I left class after a little bit and saw fire and smoke from the interstate,” resident Kyle Perry recalled.

“It did appear preliminarily that it started at the lower level,” says Macon-Bibb Fire Chief Marvin Riggins. “At this point in time it’s pretty hard to discern as to the totality of the damage…we know there is some structural damage that was done.”

Residents 41NBC spoke with on the scene at the time didn’t know if their belongings had been damaged.
By the time 41NBC left around 7:30, the smoke had cleared and the fire had been controlled.
