Construction for New Bibb County Juvenile Justice Center to Start Soon

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Bibb County is almost ready to start the first phases of construction on its new Juvenile Justice Center.

County leaders met Tuesday to get an update on the project. Originally the plan was to start construction sometime this month, but getting contracts and preparing the site off Oglethorpe Street has caused delays.

Right now juvenile court is held in the Bibb County courthouse. Bibb County Chairman Sam Hart says the county needs its own juvenile justice building to separate children from adult offenders and offer intervention programs.

“This will enable us to address their needs in a different way,” Hart said. “We hope to develop an intervention team and a campus where we have other persons who are responsible for intervention and trying to get these people back on the positive roads.”

The new center costs $6 million and will be paid for with penny tax funds.

Construction is set to start late March or early April.
