Mayor Reichert Pleased with Results of Fiscal Year 2012 Audit

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The results of a fiscal year 2012 financial audit on the city of Macon are in.

Tuesday night, a representative from Mauldin and Jenkins, the firm that conducted the review, presented its findings to city council.

He said as a whole, the city has made big strides when it comes to its finances.

Previous audits have turned up as many as 30 flaws and just last year, there were 24, but this year’s review turned up only six: things like how grant money is handled and the amount of people in the accounts receivable department.

The firm’s representative said those flaws are easy fixes.

“What that tells me is that the administration actually did take last year’s audit seriously,” says Councilman Tom Ellington.  “It provided a road map for how to avoid findings in the future and I think that we’re going to see with those six, similar steps taken.  I think that we’re in a very good position right now.  I was very, very pleased with the results of the audit and it’s always nice to have somebody impartial from outside coming in and taking a look and saying, ‘Yes, you’re doing a good job.'”

Tuesday night’s presentation was the first of several public forums Mayor Reichert will hold this month to report the State of the City.

Throughout January, he’ll give updates on economic and community development, the Second Street Downtown Corridor Project and SPLOST projects.

At the end of the month, he’ll present his strategic plan for the final year of the city before it consolidates with Bibb County.
