UPDATE: Macon Police Identify Deadly Single-Car Crash Victim

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Macon Police Department identified David Coley, 39, as the victim who died Sunday morning in a crash at Mercer University and Columbus Road.

According to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones, Coley was speeding in a 1996 Impala SS when the car crashed into a utility pole. He was trapped inside of the vehicle.

Jones said the car did not belong to the driver, it belongs to Carlos Sledge.

Sledge was asleep at 5 a.m. this morning when he got the call. At first he thought it was a joke.

“They kept asking if I was okay,” and I said ‘yes, I’m in the bed'”.

The last time Sledge saw his car in one piece was when he dropped it off at a repair shop in Macon. He still has no idea how Coley got behind the wheel, but said he is not the mechanic he gave his car too.

“The vehicle right now isn’t important,” Sledge said, “we got a life lost. That’s gone be the most important thing right now. You can always get cars back, we’re just going to hope for the best.”

Sledge estimates it’s about $10,000 worth of damage to the car.
