GBI and NAACP to Investigate Fatal Kroger Shooting
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The investigation into a fatal police-involved shooting will be handed over to Georgia Bureau of Investigations.
Sammie Davis, Jr. was shot and killed by Macon Police Officer Clayton Sutton outside of Kroger on Dec. 21.
The Investigation Division of the Macon Police Department completed its investigation and the file was sent over to the District Attorney’s Office for review. On Monday, the new Bibb County District Attorney David Cooke met with the Macon Police Department. After the meeting, he told officers he intended the hand the case over to the GBI for a third-party review.
But some city officials feel like it should have happened sooner. Macon City Council member Henry Gibson isn’t confident in Macon Police Department’s Internal Affairs Divison.
“I’ve had several citizens complain to me that the chief has not been vigilant,” Gibson said.
Macon City Council member Henry Ficklin also weighed in stating in a letter that “hopefully this situation warrants a different approach.” Ficklin said he to called for the GBI to investigate the case early on.
41 NBC has reached out to the Macon Police Department, Spokesperson Jami Gaudet, Internal Affairs and Chief Burns, but no one will comment on the case.
Macon Mayor Robert Reichert weighed in on the shooting Monday saying that he “felt it my duty to visit with Mr. Davis’ family and to assure them—and the community—that an appropriate investigation will be conducted.”
However Davis’ sister Cheryl said, she has not heard from the mayor since the incident initially occurred.
The NAACP also plans to conduct a separate investigation. NAACP Macon-Bibb County branch President Gwennette Westbrooks told 41 NBC that they are following the case closely.
