Baby Found in Montezuma Dumpster is a Hoax

BOLANDMONTEZUMA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- A joke gone bad could send a Montezuma woman to jail after she told police she found a baby in a dumpster.

Montezuma Police Chief Eric Finch says the police department received numerous calls over the holiday season about a baby being found in the dumpster. The callers were asking if a newborn was found covered in plastic by a lady who was walking by and heard it crying.

Chief Finch says the E-911 Center did not have a report of anyone finding a baby in a dumpster.

“Officers began to receive calls on their personal cell phones concerning a baby being in a dumpster,” Chief Finch said. “Our officers were instructed to check all the dumpsters in town and they found a baby doll in the Subway dumpster.”

After investigating the incident, police contacted Alexis Boland who said she found the baby in the dumpster behind a Subway while walking to work at the Dollar General Store. She then said she called 911 and reported she found a baby. She told police she gave the baby to two cops driving a white  patrol car with red and blue markings.

“We knew something was wrong at this time because none of the patrol units within our county are white with red and blue markings and there were no report where anyone had contacted first responders; nor, had the baby been brought by the local hospital,” Chief Finch said.

There was a break in the case when a family member contacted the police saying Boland wanted to talk. During the interview she admitted to finding a baby doll in the dumpster. She thought it would be funny to play a joke on a co-worker and a few store customers overheard Boland telling the story. By word of mouth, the story spread out into the public.

Boland was arrested and booked into the Macon County Jail. She is charged with making a false statement to law enforcement and could be sent to prison for up to five years.
