Tenth Annual Senior Citizens Christmas Luncheon Held in Macon

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – An ageless middle Georgia tradition celebrated its 10th year of giving Thursday, and 41NBC was there for the fun.

The annual Melvin Flowers Senior Citizens Christmas Luncheon was held at the Frank Johnson Recreation Center in Macon.

The luncheon started as a Thanksgiving event to give young men involved in the Middle Georgia Sports Program an opportunity to give back to the community.

“Coach Flowers,” as he’s come to be known over the years, raises funds for the event each year and coordinates everything from the decorations to the meals.

He says he loves doing these events for the seniors and that it means a lot to him, too.

“It means a lot,” says Flowers.  “I mean, I like giving.  My grandparents and all are passed away and most of them are just like mamas to me, and I enjoy working with them.  They look forward to this and they asked me last year, ‘Are you gonna have another one?’ And I said, ‘As long as I live, I will.'”

If you’d like to volunteer with any of the senior citizens programs in Macon and Bibb County, or become a sponsor, give Melvin Flowers a call at 501-2525.
