Veterans High Builds Livestock Barn

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (Houston County Schools)– Veterans High School is pleased to announce that it has realized its goal to build a livestock barn.  The new barn measures 136 feet long and 48 feet wide.  It is located on the back of the school property.

Agriculture teachers Dr. Clay Walker and Mike Parker crafted the plan to bring the dream of a first-class show barn to reality.  The plan included using a work crew from the Georgia Department of Corrections as well as parent, student and community volunteers.  Dr. Walker and student Tavish Smith are pictured leveling boards for the barn pens.

The Department of Corrections work crew was on site Mondays through Thursdays until 3:30 p.m.  Students, parents and community volunteers worked from 4:00 p.m. until dusk on week days and dawn-to-dusk over weekends.  In just three weeks the barn was structurally complete.

Parker commented, “A popular phrase is ‘If you build it, they will come.’  The same can be said of our new barn.  Three months after completion, it is filled with 40 pigs and cattle.  Having these animals on campus has multiplied the opportunities for hands-on instruction and field trips.  In addition to our agriculture classes, teachers and students in our science, English, math and special education departments have made instructional use of the facility.”
