‘Daybreak’ Organization Celebrates Grand Opening In Front Of Volunteers and Supporters

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – It’s downtown Macon’s newest non-profit, and judging by the crowd gathered Thursday in the chilly weather, it might just be one its favorites.

Between the volunteers, staff, other non-profits, and those who are utilizing its services, Daybreak saw well over 100 people walk through its doors at today’s ribbon cutting ceremony.

Daybreak, a local non-profit under the support of another non-profit called Depaul U.S.A., is the latest mission to help the homeless, and revitalize downtown. With a newly remodeled facility, which by the way was almost entirely refurbished and equipped for free, allows the homeless and anyone going through tough times, to come in and rest for a while.

It doesn’t offer free meals and an overnight place to sleep. However, what Daybreak does offer, is a hot shower, a quick breakfast, a couch to take a nap on, internet and computers to learn how to create a resume, phone lines to keep in touch with friends and family, laundry facilities, a medical checkup, or just a chair to come and sit and relax on.

Charles Levesque, the Executive Director of Depaul U.S.A., has been traveling down to Macon from Chicago throughout the past two years, as the plans for Daybreak have developed, and the building has been repaired. With tears in his eyes, he told the crowd how he has never seen anything like what he’s seen in Macon happen before.

“It’s really captured the imagination of Macon. You don’t see homeless projects capturing a city’s imagination like Daybreak has captured Macon. And I can attribute that to Daybreak. I can also attribute that to the people of Macon who really embraced the project, and are very giving…and really want to do this work to improve the lot of people who don’t have homes,” Levesque explained.

Daybreak is located at 174 Walnut Street, in downtown Macon.
