Houston County BOE Gives Green Light for Cameras on Bus Stop Arms

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Today, the Houston County Board of Education voted unanimously to partner with American Traffic Solutions to catch drivers who illegally pass school buses.

The company will install cameras on bus stop arms. Video of the violators will be sent to the Houston County Sheriff’s Office to be looked at for infractions. If you’re guilty, you could be fined.

Assistant Superintendent of Finance, Stephen Thublin, says the school district conducted a survey. They found on an average day 61 people drive around a school bus when the stop arm is out.

The cameras will be installed on 20 buses to start. Thublin is hoping that’s all they’ll need to curb this problem.

“Hopefully through this process we will eliminate any motorists passing a stopped school bus, and really this will be a moot point and won’t be needed in the future,” says Thublin.

The funds collected from the violators will be used to reimburse ATS. The company agreed to install the cameras, and monitor the system without money upfront. Thublin says the cameras should be installed within the next month, or so.
