UPDATE: Macon Teen Shooting Is Gang Related
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon police are still trying to piece together what happened during a shooting that injured a young man Tuesday afternoon. Investigators aren’t saying much, but the police report says it is gang related.
“It happened right here in front of my face,” the victim’s friend Calvin Harris said.
Harris says he and his friends spent the afternoon playing video games and then walked back to his home off Lamont Street. That’s when Harris says he saw a white Acura drive by them. It then turned around and shots were fired.
“When they rode back past this way all I heard was shots and I had just seen a little piece of hand,” Harris said.
The boys started to run and Harris’ friend Corey Jackson was shot in the back.
“All my focus was on him and then I brought him in my house right there and I laid him on the sofa until the ambulance came,” he said.
Police are staying tight lipped about the shooting, but according to the incident report it is gang related. Harris says he doesn’t know why it happened.
“You didn’t know if your buddy was having any problems? He didn’t say anything to you?” 41 NBC asked.
“No ma’am, he ain’t say nothing to me. Now if he did, he kept it on the low, but he ain’t say nothing to me though,” Harris said. “It looked like they were shooting at him, but if they were, don’t know why they shot at him.”
Harris says he is still recovering from his near death experience. He is grateful that his friend is going to be okay.
“I’m just lucky he didn’t die and that he’s alright.”
41 NBC found out the victim is the same student who was arrested after a four person fight at Westside High School last month. According to a Bibb County Board of Education press release, an 18-year-old male student was arrested on September 11th and charged with Affray and Disrupting a Public School. 41 NBC requested the inmate details for that student and confirmed the address for the student matched the address of the shooting victim.
Officials have not said if the shooting is related to that fight.
This is an active investigation. Police are asking anyone with information to call Crimestoppers at 1-877-68-CRIME.
