UPDATE: Bloomfiend Middle Student Arrested, Charged with Bringing Gun to School
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A 14 year-old female Bloomfield Middle School student is arrested and charged with felony possession of a weapon on school grounds. According to a news release from the school district, the incident happened this morning around 10:30 am.
Administrators were notified of a weapon on campus. The student was confronted and admitted to having a small caliber handgun on her. It was hidden within the student’s clothing, and was retrieved without incident. The district did not say if the gun was loaded or not.
Director of Risk Management for the school district, David Gowan, says police responded to the incident within minutes. Since the weapon was recovered so quickly, Gowan says students and faculty were able to go about their normal routine for the rest of the day.
Parents were notified of the incident through an automated school messenger, and a letter was sent home today from principal, Dr. Shannon Norfleet.
The Bibb County Sherriff’s Office was contacted to make arrangements with juvenile authorities.
Bloomfield has one of the three alternative schools located on its campus, but Gowan says the student who was arrested was not from the alternative school.
