Versailles Apartments Catch Fire
MACON, Georgia (41 NBC/WMGT)- The Bibb County Fire Department is investigating a blaze that left a family homeless tonight. Fire fighters received a 911 call just after 9:30 Monday morning about smoke coming from the roof of the Versailles Apartments. Firefighters were able to put out the fire before it had a chance to spread to the other apartments.
Most of the damage was to the apartment on the second floor. The fire chief said no one was at home at the time of the fire. Resident Brittani Gore lives right next door to the apartment that caught fire.
“I was sleep in my apartment, and we heard the maintenance man banging on the door. As I woke up, my window was up so I smelled the fire or whatever. So, I woke my roommates up, and we rushed outside,” said Resident Brittani Gore.
Investigators believe a squirrel could have been the cause of the fire. Fire fighters found a squirrel nest in the attic next to wires that looked like they had been chewed on. The Fire Department said if you think you may have a squirrel nest in your attic, you should get it professionally removed. Squirrels like to chew on wires and that could result in a fire.
