Voter Registration Ends Tuesday, Thousands of New Bibb County Voters

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Tuesday was the last day to register to vote and thousands of Bibb County residents took the time to make sure their voices will be heard.

It came down to the wire for some residents in Bibb County but waiting till the last minute didn’t stop them from doing their civic duty.

“It’s been great for registration,” Macon-Bibb County Supervisor of Elections Elaine Carr said. “We’ve had them standing in lines actually at points in here this morning. We’ve had them in line waiting for us to open the door this morning.”

Tuesday marked the final day of voter registration across the Peach State. Carr says there was a lot of push this year to get as many registered voters as possible.

“We had organizations out there steadily helping us get the voters registered to the point where we almost ran out of registration cards, so that’s good,” she said. “We had to borrow some from another county.”

Carr says Bibb County has more than 17 hundred new registered voters in addition to the 86,000 already registered. She is expecting that number to get bigger as the voters mail in their registration.

“We know we have a lot of cards out there and a lot of them are letting the voters themselves mail them into the state and that takes a turnaround process time,” Carr said.

Residents registering just before the deadline say they didn’t want to miss their chance to cast a ballot.

“I feel like its our duty as a citizen to do that,” Sharon Paul said. “It’s one of our responsibilities.”

“I like to vote. I vote for everything,” Martha Davis said.

Early voting in Bibb County kicks off on Monday, October 15th at the elections office. Residents in Monroe and Baldwin counties, as well as the City of Perry in Houston County can also cast their ballot on October 15th. Early voting in Warner Robins starts on October 22nd.
