Energy Efficient Upgrades at Houston County Schools

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Students in Mrs. Bass’ second grade class at Tucker Elementary didn’t notice the brighter classrooms from the new LED lights or the cooler air from the school’s new air conditioning unit.

But once the energy efficient transformation is complete, Houston County officials will see some savings.

Tucker Elementary was one of 18 schools to receive energy upgrades funded by the E-SPLOST. The school is now equip with a new heating ventilation air conditioning system and more efficient lighting. The renovations are expected to save the county 25% on it’s electric bill.

“Roughly what we’re putting on each classroom and comparing these with the older units, they’re about 20% more efficient,” said Jason Daniel, Houston County Schools Director of Facilities.

The education penny tax is estimated to raise $125 million dollars for Houston County Schools. So far, the school system has spent $80 dollars on energy efficient projects. When the upgrades are complete nearly 18 schools will have efficient lighting, safer flooring and cleaner air.

“They’re gonna be just as comfortable if not better, we’ve got better indoor air quality measures incorporated in these new units,” said Daniel.

Officials believe the switch will save them millions of dollars. The projects are expected to be complete by October.
