Indianapolis 500 Will Start With 34 Cars Entered
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Thirty-four cars are officially on this year’s Indianapolis 500 list, and race officials hope they will have a full field for the May 27 race.
There have been growing concerns that organizers may not have the traditional 33-car starting grid after a rule change requiring new engines and equipment.
It still could be a challenge getting there. Of the 34 cars that appear on Thursday’s entry list, four do not have a driver.
Speedway CEO Jeff Belskus says he’s confident they will not only fill the grid, but that there will be bumping, too.
Last year’s runner-up, JR Hildebrand, delivered the entry list to Belskus at the speedway.
