Easter Weekend Sees Exciting Action At Watermelon Capitol Speedway In Cordele

CORDELE, GA – There is an old saying in racing that when there’s a full moon on a Saturday night at a local short track, it’s bound to be a night full of exciting racing. Easter weekend at Watermelon Capital in Cordele, Ga was definitely no exception.

Starting off the feature portion of the evening was the go-carts for their fifteen lap event with Rusty Turner on the pole and Gary Mobley on the outside as the field came to the green flag. As the checkered flag flew for the first time of the evening, it was Turner picking up the win. Rounding out the top five were Rebecca Turner, Gary Turner, Gary Mobley and Mike Coonfield.

Up next on the card was the Bandolero division with Chandler Smith and Ashton Winger lined up side by side to take the green alongside.  As the race unfolded Zach Leonhardi, who picked up the win last race, quickly made his way through the field to challenge Smith for the lead in the closing laps of the fifteen lap event. When the checkers fell, it was Smith holding off a hard charging Leonhardi for the win. Rounding out the top five were Winger, Connor Younginer and Lawson Ingold.

The Mini Stock division was up next on the speedway with a fifteen lap dual that had Banks Perdue and Brett Roberts on the front row. As the dust settled, James Pennington scored the win with  Roberts , AW Napier and Banks Perdue rounding out the field.

The ever exciting Enduros were up next with Amercus native Cody Hale aiming to make it two in a row, but would be a challenge as he would have to come from the back to the front to make it a realty per the track race win rule. Per the rule, any driver picking up the win will have to start the next feature event in the rear. The green flag waved for the twenty lap event, Jimmy Nasworthy and Wesley Burke made up the front row.

As the laps were winding down, Hale was making his way through the field until a late race caution came out due to debris which setup a restart with the choose rule in effect. With the choose rule, if the 2nd place car does not elect to take the outside, the car next in line has the opportunity and with no takers and with no takers in front Hale took advantage and restarted outside the front row and eventually took the lead and never looked back picking up his 2nd Enduro win of the season. Rounding out the top 5 were Burke,  Nasworthy,  Michael Hutto and Jeff Davis.

In the final feature of the evening, it was Cody Hale strapping in once again for a twenty lap event and this time in the Super Street class. In the early stages a good battle engaged between Hale and Edward Allen until Hale was able to put some distance between himself and Allen and went on to take the win and pick up his second win of the evening. Finishing second was Allen with Brian Cromer, Jeff Prescott and Tommy Skinner completing the top five.
