Georgia Ranks 3rd in Metal Theft Claims
MACON,Georgia(41NBC/WMGT)-Metal theft costs local businesses thousands of dollars in repairs each
year, but a new law aims to curb that trend. Business leaders and investigators met Tuesday at a luncheon to discuss how the new law will work and the best ways to avoid being a target. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, Ohio is ranked number one in metal theft claims;
Texas is number 2, and Georgia is number 3. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office encourages businesses to form a “business watch.” That way, you will make crimes against yourself and your
fellow business neighbors as difficult as possible.
“We encourage businesses to install video cameras. We encourage them to mark their air conditioning coils and install alarms on air conditioners,” said Lt. George Meadows, Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.
The bill would eliminate cash payments to metal sellers. Payment through a check, electronic funds transfer, or voucher may be used as payment.
