River Edge Foundation to host first Steps of Hope walk in Macon on October 17

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The River Edge Foundation is hosting its inaugural Steps of Hope walk Saturday, October 17, at Amerson River Park in Macon to raise awareness about mental health and substance use disorders.

Mia Geiger, director of development for the River Edge Foundation, joined 41 Today to discuss the event and the importance of supporting individuals and families affected by mental health challenges and substance use disorders.

“Tomorrow we’re holding it at Amerson River Park, and it’s honoring those that we’ve lost, supporting those that are still fighting, and celebrating those who are in recovery,” Geiger said.

The walk is also intended to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and substance use disorders while encouraging people to seek treatment and support.

Geiger shared statistics from 2024, including that approximately 61 million U.S. adults experienced mental health issues, 49,000 people died by suicide and 80,000 people died from overdoses.

Geiger added that mental health and substance use disorders can affect individuals and families throughout the community.

Geiger said River Edge Behavioral Health provides treatment for mental health and substance use disorders, including services for people who do not have health insurance or the financial resources to pay for care.

“They can come to River Edge with insurance, without insurance, no money, just show up, and we can get them into treatment for both mental health and substance use disorders,” Geiger said.

The organization hopes Steps of Hope will encourage more conversations about mental health, recovery and the resources available in Central Georgia.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the walk will take place from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Registration costs $30 and includes a commemorative T-shirt and wristband. A $20 walk-only registration option is also available. Participants can choose between a 2-mile route and a 1.25-mile loop.

Proceeds will support River Edge Behavioral Health programs, including assistance with pharmacy copays, transportation and hygiene packages for individuals receiving treatment.
