Macon-Bibb Count celebrates Frank Johnson Recreation Center renovations

The recreation center, located at 2227 Mercer University Drive, received a series of improvements funded through the county’s Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or SPLOST.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon-Bibb County is celebrating the completion of major renovations at the Frank Johnson Recreation Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday.

The renovations include a new playground, expanded parking, improvements to the baseball and softball field, tennis court and pavilions, and a new pump house.

Inside the recreation center, improvements were also made to the conference room and weight room. The facility received new flooring and fresh paint throughout.

Macon-Bibb County Recreation Director Robert Walker said the improvements are designed to give residents more opportunities for recreation in the Unionville community.

“We want the community to enjoy it,” Walker said. “We offer a great positive recreation program and this is just an amenity to that to provide a space, a destination for recreation in the Unionville community.”

Walker highlighted several amenities available at the property, including an inclusive playground, a second playground, tennis and pickleball courts and a softball and baseball field with LED lighting.

The county says the renovations are part of its continued investment in recreation facilities throughout the community using voter-approved SPLOST funds.

Residents are invited to tour the renovated spaces and see the improvements at the recreation center.

The ribbon cutting is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Frank Johnson Recreation Center. The ceremony will also be streamed live on Macon-Bibb County’s Facebook page.
