Red Cross urges Middle Georgia families to build emergency kits
The Red Cross recommends a three-day kit for evacuations and a two-week supply of food, water and other essentials for staying home.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The American Red Cross is urging Middle Georgia families to prepare now for hurricanes, severe storms, house fires and other emergencies before disaster strikes.
This National Preparedness Month, the Red Cross is encouraging families to make an emergency plan, build a disaster supply kit and learn how to stay informed when seconds count.
American Red Cross communications manager Suzanne Lawler says that means packing an emergency kit with essentials you may need if the power goes out or you have to leave home quickly.
“So, the Red Cross recommends you have two kits: a to-go kit which would cover about three days, and a stay-at-home kit,” she said. “Think about if you lose power. Your home may be fine, but the city or neighborhood may lose power. So, your to-go kit should have important papers. We keep ours in a trapper keeper, just something really quick where you can grab it.”
She says the stay-at-home kit should cover you for two weeks.
“You may lose power for up to two weeks,” she said. “You want to have a gallon of water per person per day. Nonperishable food. Don’t forget the can openers. You want to have your cell phone chargers, and invest in solar power flashlights and solar power cell phone chargers. And you want to have things in your kit you just might need, extra cash and masks.”
She also says to be sure to have important documents and other items.
“Have a picture of your pet just in case it gets lost,” she said. “Have people’s phone numbers, all your friends and family. Don’t forget the can opener, and a one-month supply of medications.”
