Trump downplayed the possibility that the renewed fighting would lead to a return to full-scale war, describing the latest confrontation as “very limited.”

“That doesn’t mean we won’t smack them. We’ll see what happens,” Trump said.

The renewed tensions come as the Pentagon faces another leadership shakeup.

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has submitted his resignation and is expected to step down, according to a person familiar with the matter and a White House official.

A source familiar with the situation told NBC News that Driscoll had raised concerns about Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s firing of generals and the potential impact on Army readiness.

Earlier this year, Hegseth pushed out the Army chief of staff and the Navy secretary.

The White House praised Driscoll following news of his resignation. The Pentagon and Army had not commented.

Trump also dismissed concerns about dwindling U.S. weapons stockpiles, saying the country remains well supplied with ammunition and munitions.

The six-month war with Iran has also kept oil and gasoline prices elevated.

Trump praised a deal with Venezuela that he said would give the United States control of 65 billion barrels of oil. The president said the agreement would help replenish American reserves and eventually bring prices down.

Experts caution that extracting the oil and bringing it to market could take time, delaying any potential impact on U.S. prices.

“Ultimately prices are going to come down,” Trump said. “Now, will it happen before the election? I can’t tell you that.”
