(LILAMAX)- A new UC Riverside study found greater access to dollar stores was associated with higher rates of obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and Type 2 diabetes.
Researchers found access to traditional grocery stores was associated with better health outcomes. The findings held across the United States even after researchers accounted for factors including income and unemployment.
The study examined about 34,000 locations operated by Dollar General, Dollar Tree, 99 Cents Only Stores and Family Dollar.
Meanwhile, Walmart announced it will begin accepting Apple Pay, Google Pay and other tap-to-pay methods at its U.S. stores after holding out for more than a decade.
Starting this week, Walmart and Sam’s Club will begin rolling out contactless payment options at select locations. Customers will be able to pay using contactless cards, smartphones and smartwatches. The option will not immediately be available at every location.
