Houston County Schools highlight safety response after Warner Robins High shooting

Del Martin, the district's director of safety and school operations, said while the shooting was an unfortunate situation, several safety measures worked as intended.

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Houston County School District officials are highlighting the response of students, staff and school resource officers following a shooting at Warner Robins High School in mid-August.

Martin said school resource officers were already on campus and responded immediately. He also said a teacher was able to press a crisis alert button, automatically sending information to 911.

District officials say students and staff followed procedures they regularly practice during school safety drills.

“I feel like our students and staff did an awesome job with our Centegix drills and safety drills that we’ve always practiced,” Martin said.

According to Martin, schools practice safety drills at least three times a year. Warner Robins High School had conducted a drill the day before the shooting.

The Houston County School District is also working to increase security at schools across the county. Officials say metal detectors have been ordered and are expected to arrive within the next few weeks.

The devices will be installed at various schools throughout Houston County.
