(NBC)- Former Congressman Eric Swalwell is facing additional scrutiny after the FBI reportedly executed searches and seized electronic devices as part of an ongoing investigation into sexual misconduct allegations.
According to a person familiar with the matter, FBI agents executed a search warrant as Swalwell arrived at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday, seizing electronic devices including his cellphone.
His Washington, D.C., home was also searched the following day as part of the investigation.
The FBI and Attorney General Todd Blanche declined to comment on the investigation.
“I’m not allowed to talk about any sort of ongoing investigation,” Blanche said. “I can’t comment on that.”
Swalwell had been a leading candidate for governor of California before multiple women accused him of sexual assault or misconduct.
Swalwell has denied the allegations, previously calling accusations of sexual assault “flat false.”
One of his accusers, Lonna Drewes, alleges Swalwell drugged, raped and choked her in 2018.
Drewes’ attorney said she has not spoken with the FBI but is “encouraged to learn about the escalation in their apparent investigation.”
NBC News said it reached out to Swalwell’s legal team but had not received a response. Earlier this year, his attorney denied every allegation against him, calling them “false, fabricated, and deeply offensive.”
Swalwell ultimately ended his campaign for California governor and resigned his seat in Congress.
A special election to fill his former congressional seat remains undecided.
