Atrium Health doctor explains diabetes risks, symptoms and prevention

“Diabetes is a silent disease,” Sachs said.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Diabetes can develop without obvious warning signs, making prevention and regular health screenings important, according to Dr. Vivian Sachs.

Sachs said people who are overweight or have obesity, have a family history of diabetes or live a sedentary lifestyle may have a higher risk of developing the disease.

“Diabetes is a silent disease,” Sachs said.

She encouraged people who may be at risk to speak with their primary care or family doctor about testing for diabetes.

Sachs said lifestyle changes, including eating a balanced diet and staying physically active, can play an important role in prevention.

When it comes to diet, Sachs recommends focusing on portion control and foods including vegetables, fruits, nuts and healthy sources of protein. She also recommends limiting processed foods and sugary drinks.

Sachs said sweet tea, specialty coffee drinks and other sugary beverages can contain significant amounts of sugar that people may not always recognize.

Exercise is another important part of diabetes prevention. Sachs recommends 150 minutes of physical activity each week, which can be divided into smaller periods throughout the day.

For someone with a sedentary job, Sachs said physical activity could include taking short walking breaks during the workday. People at home could also incorporate movement while watching television.

Sachs said studies have shown that being physically active can help prevent diabetes even when exercise does not result in weight loss.

While diabetes may not always cause noticeable symptoms, Sachs said there are several warning signs people should know.

Unexplained or rapid weight loss, urinating more frequently than usual and excessive thirst are among the symptoms that could indicate diabetes, Sachs said.

People experiencing those symptoms or who are concerned about their risk should contact their primary care physician for additional information and testing.
