83 emergency sirens being installed across Macon-Bibb County

Another 27 sirens will be installed at new locations, bringing the countywide total to 83.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Installation is underway on new and upgraded outdoor emergency sirens across Macon-Bibb County.

The nearly $3 million project will upgrade the county’s tornado and severe weather warning system using voter-approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds.

According to Macon-Bibb County, crews will replace wooden poles and equipment at 56 existing siren locations with new 50-foot concrete poles and updated equipment.

Another 27 sirens will be installed at new locations, bringing the countywide total to 83.

The project also includes five years of maintenance.

Emergency Management Agency Director Spencer Hawkins said the upgrades are intended to improve reliability and expand outdoor warning coverage.

Officials are also encouraging residents to have multiple ways to receive emergency information, including weather radios, phone alerts and local media.
