BS Report: The Lead Still Holds, for Now
The Braves started the weekend series in New York against the Yankees with an eight game win streak that was snapped on Friday night. They lost two of three to the Yankees. All three games, one run games, losing the first two before winning the game on Sunday. And that was a big win for them to get out of New York.
With at least one win under their belt at two out of three, so did the Phillies to the lead of the National League East stays at eight and a half games. This starting pitching, believe it or not, continues to be outstanding. I mean, Tyler Mahle, who made his debut on Friday night, was great with six shutout innings. You had a decent performance from Chris Sale on Saturday and then Brant Holmes was awesome on Sunday.
Hard to believe that of the three pitchers Mahle, Sale and Holmes, the worst start, quote unquote, was from Chris Sale. But that offense needs to do better. They face three very good pitchers freed, Cole and Cutler over the weekend. And of course the offense struggled. So that’s what you’re going to see in the playoffs. Which means all the attention we’ve been giving the starting rotation about it having to do well in October.
Well so does that offense. They have to do well against the better competition. The Mets will be the next team they’ll play starting tonight with game one of a three game series at Truist Park. Bryce Elder will be on the mound for Atlanta. He’s eight and six with a 3.69 earned run average. Christian Scott will be on the mound for New York.
He is a right hander who is three and three with a 3.15 earned run average. The Mets have actually played a little bit better as of late. They have, they’re still 19.5 games out, but they are playing a little bit better since the All-Star break at 12 and ten. But the Braves have had trouble against the Mets this year, and hopefully they can have a good series before the before the schedule gets a little tougher.
They have Arizona in this weekend in Atlanta. Did they have a road trip that’s going to be really tough starting next week with three games in Minnesota, a make up game in Chicago against the White Sox and then three in Milwaukee before coming back to Atlanta two weeks from tonight and playing the Dodgers for three, the Rockies for three, and then a make up game with the Giants as well.
So we’re down. A case is here. There’s only 44 games left. It’s getting tight. And the lead of the National League East remains the same at eight and a half. But they are three games back of the Brewers the best record in baseball. We’re going to kind of keep an eye on that. Brewers lead Tampa Bay by two and a half games in Atlanta by three.
The Dodgers are four back. So they are a game back of Atlanta. And you know what you want to try to have the home field advantage over the Brewers or the Dodgers. So that race for the best record is also very important as well. But game one of the series Braves in March tonight at Truist Park.
