Red Cross shares back-to-school safety tips for Georgia students
The Red Cross recommends younger children know their phone number, home address, how to contact a trusted adult and how to call 911 in an emergency.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The American Red Cross of Georgia is sharing safety reminders as students across the state return to school.
The Red Cross recommends younger children know their phone number, home address, how to contact a trusted adult and how to call 911 in an emergency.
Students walking to school should use sidewalks when possible, look both ways before crossing streets and stay within marked crosswalks. Bus riders should arrive at their stop early, remain a safe distance from the curb and never walk behind a school bus.
Children biking to school should wear properly fitted helmets, and everyone traveling by vehicle should wear a seat belt. Teen drivers are also encouraged to avoid distractions such as texting, calling, eating or drinking while driving.
The Red Cross is also reminding motorists to slow down around school buses. Drivers should prepare to stop when a bus has yellow flashing lights and must stop when red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended.
The organization also offers First Aid and Emergency apps and safety training courses for students, child care providers and school staff.
