(NBC)- Newly released video shows the dramatic moments a bystander confronted a gunman who opened fire outside an In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho.

The shooting happened Saturday afternoon at the restaurant, which had opened just days earlier.

Video shows the suspect, armed with what authorities described as an AR-style rifle, firing multiple rounds in the drive-thru as customers scrambled for safety.

Another man then returned fire, drawing the shooter’s attention.

Witness Lane Koehn said the armed bystander likely prevented even more people from being shot.

“He definitely distracted the shooter from shooting more people,” Koehn said. “The shooter was solely focused on him and allowed us to get out.”

Police credited both the armed civilian and an off-duty Idaho State Police trooper, who also returned fire, with helping save lives during the attack.

Authorities said three people were killed and at least seven others were injured.

The president and owner of In-N-Out confirmed one of the victims was an employee.

One witness described seeing another employee desperately trying to carry the wounded worker to safety.

Among the injured was taxi driver Terry Dudley, who was shot while charging his vehicle. His son, Michael, said his father remains hospitalized and is intubated.

Authorities identified the gunman as 24-year-old Chad Williams. Police say he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigators have not released a motive for the shooting.
