(CNN)- Tropical Storm Bertha is strengthening in the Gulf of Mexico as forecasters warn it could bring heavy rain, flooding and gusty winds to parts of the Gulf Coast.

The storm formed Monday and is already sending bands of heavy rain into Florida’s Panhandle. Emergency management officials say Bertha has become better organized and are closely monitoring its development.

Bertha is the second named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season and is forecast to affect areas from Florida to Texas. Forecasters warn the storm could produce coastal flooding, heavy rainfall and strong winds along portions of the Gulf Coast.

Boaters and fishermen along the Florida coast have already reported deteriorating conditions as winds increased throughout the day.

Although dry air and the storm’s broad circulation have limited rapid strengthening, emergency officials stress that residents should not become complacent.

Communities in parts of Mississippi are also preparing for the possibility of additional severe weather as they continue recovering from flooding earlier this summer.

Officials encourage Gulf Coast residents to review emergency plans, monitor forecasts and use the storm as an opportunity to prepare for the peak of hurricane season.
