(CNN)- A dangerous heat dome is expected to bring scorching temperatures to much of the western United States this weekend as other parts of the country continue recovering from destructive storms.

In Southern California, a heat advisory remains in effect for parts of the region, including Los Angeles, where residents are taking precautions by staying hydrated, wearing sunscreen and limiting outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.

Forecasters say widespread highs in the upper 90s and low 100s are expected Saturday from California and Oregon eastward through the Rocky Mountains.

Meanwhile, communities in the Midwest are cleaning up after powerful storms swept through the region. In the Detroit Lakes area of Minnesota, residents are recovering after a tornado caused significant damage earlier this week.

In the East, New Jersey continues to deal with the aftermath of severe storms and flooding. Governor Mikie Sherrill visited a BJ’s Wholesale Club in Ocean Township where part of the roof collapsed during heavy rainfall. Officials said no one inside the store was injured, and the cause of the collapse remains under investigation.

Elsewhere in New Jersey, part of the roof of a vacant hotel also collapsed following the severe weather, with the dramatic moment captured on camera.

Officials continue urging residents to stay weather-aware as extreme heat and the potential for additional storms affect different parts of the country.
