MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) –Parts of Middle Georgia is under a heat advisory, with heat index values as high as 105. A local doctor tells 41NBC they’re seeing more people with heat related illnesses coming into the hospital.

Several Counties have been placed under heat alerts, due to doctors reporting a spike in heat exhaustion, heat strokes, and dehydration. Piedmont Macon Medical Director for the ER, Chris Hogan says those on medication, have heart problems, or asthma could be the most at risk.

“We see this in extremely young and extremely old; so, as you’re taking your medication, be aware of the sign’s dehydration, which is decreased urine output, dark urine, headaches, fatigue, cramps. If you experience these, please contact your doctor, drink plenty of fluids, and get to a cool area,” said Hogan.

Doctor Hogan explains that individuals who suffer from mental health could be affected by the heat as well.

“Some medications that are used for treating psychiatric illness can change the way your body responds to heat. So, for that population it would be more important to stick to those guidelines,” said Hogan.

Doctor Hogan gives tips on proper first aid procedures if a heat emergency occurs.

“The first step would be to remove them from the environment. Then do what we call passive cooling. So, get them to a cool environment, if there in lots of clothes remove those clothes, give them water to drink, and then, if they don’t show improvement see a medical professional,” said Hogan.

If you need a cooling center to go to, the Haven Hope House in warner robins will be providing services beginning July 13th. Director of operations Brandon Hayes says the center can hold up to 150 people at a time.

“During our days of service, which is Monday- Wednesday, then we have case management on Thursday. We offer showers, laundry services, a meal, spiritual encouragement, and also those community connects as well,” said Hogan.

The Haven Hope House is located at 79 Green ST in Warner Robins. There are also several cooling centers here in Macon such as; The Salvation Army, Daybreak Center, and the Brookdale Resource Center.
